Runs ok if the revs are kept up, but will drop into limp home mode at idle
while running seems to have full power and normal performance
in limp home mode timing changes (audible) and max revs 1500
compression test, all ~500 psi
has had petrol
error code p0008
engine management light on all the time
service light on but does not come on immediately after reset

What do you mean, has had petrol? Has petrol been added to the fuel? If so how much when and what was done about it?

Was it driven with the petrol, if so how far? You may have damaged an injector or the pump.

I would be suspecting a pump problem, the diesel is the lubricant for the pump, petrol is very dry, you may have damaged the pump internally, regardless the pump should be checked over.
