I OWN A FORD FIESTA 1.6 (PETROL) WHICH IS JUST ABOUT 10 MONTHS OLD. I'VE NOTICED THAT MY STEERING COLUMN MAKES A CLATTERING NOISE AS IF TWO METAL PEICES ARE STRIKING AGAINST EACH OTHER. THE NOISE IS PROMINENT WHILE TURING AND ON BAD ROADS. I GOT MY STEERING COLUMN CHECKED IN THE FORD SHOWROOM BUT THE NOISE STILL REMAINS. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO PROBLEM WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE RUNS STRAIGHT EVEN AFTER LEAVING THE STEERING. WHAT COULD BE THE POSSIBLE REASON FOR THE SAME? CAN YOU PLEASE HELP.

I would be having the steering re checked as this noise should not be there, it sound as if ther eis a problem with in the steering column, I would be getting the dealer to re check this, as it is a warranty item, insist on a full repair and not a fob off.

There are a few possibilities.
If you have a tilt or telescoping steering wheel, the lock to keep either adjustment in place may be loose.
Depending on the severity of the use the car sees and the mileage, the axles could need replacement.
Let me know the following;
If you make a sharp u-turn and try to listen outside the xar with the windows down, could the noise come from the front end around the wheels?
If so, is it a, "clicking" type sounds?
Does the car vibrate or shake at any speed or under acceleration?
I will keep an eye on this post and replay ASAP.

Sorry for the double reply. I completely agree with Mark. It is a safety issue and do not let the dealership bully you around.
Ask to see, "Service Bulletins", as they are different from recalls. They are not required to publish them or even tell you about them. There may be something relating to your issue. I have always found that if I keep a polite attitude they cannot turn me away as an, "unresonable customer". Being educated and < "killing them with kindness", will eventually make it easier for them to deal with the issue rahter than turn you away.
Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.
