I need to changed water pump, thermostat and flushed old coolant?

Discovered a leak from the original water pump. I need to changed water pump, thermostat and flushed old coolant. Developed a noise shortly thereafter. Thought it might be old coolant that had leaked onto a pulley and got sprayed around the engine compartment. I washed the pulleys and replaced the belt, idler pulley and tensioner pulley. Noise is still there. The noise is hard to describe but it only happens around 1900-2100 rpm. Will do it in park and driving. Its almost like a rattle in the front of the engine. I know if I have a bad water pump.

I was wanting to know how to replace the water pump on my truck and how long it calls for. Im familiar with cars and trucks, i just need to know whether or not i should take it to somebody or not?

what do you have for engine size and you may need a special tools to remove fan clutch in most it calls for about 3Hrs

1. Do I need to remove the fan shrowd to remove the water pump? If so How do I get it out without removing the radiator?

2. What is the best way to remove the nut that holds on the pulley from the water pump?

I just changed the water pump in my '01 Ram. I know the body styles changed, but I'm not sure about under the hood. I had to take out the shroud, but not the radiator. Obviously, drain the coolant, disconnect the upper and lower hoses, take off the coolant reservoir and the washer fluid tank. There are four bolts (2 per side) holding the shroud on. You can't get the shroud off with the fan still on though. I used a 6" belt wrench and a long crescent wrench to get the fan off. Once the two are disconnected, the shroud and fan come right out.

Getting the fan nut loose is a challenge. I did it myself though. Take the belt off the pulleys first. Then get on the passenger side of the car and loop the belt wrench around the fan pulley so that you put tension in on it in an upward direction. Then put the crescent wrench on the nut and pull down with it. Once the fan is out, DO NOT LAY IT ON ITS BACK. Make sure it stays upright so the fluid doesn't settle improperly.

The hardest part of the whole process was getting the old gasket off. I recommend using some high temp silicon to seal the new gasket when you put it on.

I have an 02 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9L with 126,000 miles. I need to replace the water pump. Are there any special tools I will need? Also, what else should I replace besides the belt while I am in there?

No special tools. As far as other things to do, I would recommmend replacing the thermostat and flushing the engine block and radiator while it is apart. Also, inspect all hoses from the radiator and heater core for wear.

I need to replace my water pump and in the repair manual it says to loosen the nut that holds the fan clutch with a 34mm fan wrench while using a screwdriver or a wrench to keep the pulley bolts from turning. I cant find the pulley bolts. Which bolts are they referring to? Can I take the fan shroud off before taking the fan assembly apart? That would make it a lot easier to access the pulley area.

Your probably using a haynes manual? They make a special spanner wrench to fit in the holes in the pulley that the fan nut is up against. Stick 2 bolts in the pulley holes and then use the screwdrive/ pry bar to stop the pulley from spinning. The spanner wrench looks like a Y, with 1 pin on each leg of the V to fit in the holes. U could make one out of flat bar and make the pins short bolts? Remember the nut turns counter clockwise when facing the front of the engine.I'll try to post a pic?

Thank you. I ended up purchasing a pulley belt that wraps around the pulley and then you have to pull the belt in the opposite direction of the wrench and the nut comes loose. THanks for your reply. I am seriously considering getting rid of the vehicle and going with something other than a dodge....

my old water pump had a metal hose coming out of the heater hose area and my new one does not. How do I get that off. 01 dodge ram

Believe it or not, the only thing holding that in place is a bolt that is mounted to the engine block. The end that is in the water pump only has an O-ring at the end of it. Carefully, turn and pull to get it out. If it gets damaged, you can get a new one at most parts stores for about 15 bucks. Make sure to place a thin coating of coolant on the new o-ring when replacing it.

It is not easy to get too. The upper hose fas to come off at least. I am attaching a pic of a 318 with hose removed and the location from which it was removed from is circled.
I happen to have the MOPAR part # as you should replace it because it is difficult to get to.

Bypass hose [Mopar P/N H0063735]

I replaced the water pump on my 1996 Dodge Ram 5.2L 1500 4x4 pickup (W/AC) which is no problem except for the tube for the heater hose. I can't get the short pipe (baught a new one) to insert properly (without leaking) into the water pump discharge hole. Is there a trick to getting the pipe installed short of tapping the hole and screwing in a nipple for the heater hose?

The matal hose that attaches to the top right side of the water pump must hav a new O ring placed on it. This is what seals the connection. It also is good to apply a small amount of gasket seal to the O ring. Ths is a low pressure connection and does not require a niple.

Here are the general steps:

1. Remove the radiator.


When removing or installing the constant tension hose clamps from vehicles so equipped, use only the correct clamp tool, such as the Snap-On No. HPC-20, or equivalent.

2. Loosen all accessories that are belt driven and remove the belt(s).

3. On engines without air conditioning, remove the alternator bracket attaching bolts and tie the alternator and bracket out of the way.

4. On engines with air conditioning, remove the idler pulley assembly, alternator, and adjusting bracket.

5. Remove the fan blade, spacer (or fluid unit), pulley, and bolts as an assembly.


To prevent silicone fluid from draining into the drive bearing and ruining the lubricant, do not place the thermostatic fan drive unit with the shaft pointing downward.

6. Disconnect all hoses from the water pump.

7. Remove the air conditioning compressor front mounting bolts.

8.Remove the water pump-to-compressor front bracket bolts and the bracket. Remove the water pump.


Do not disconnect any refrigerant lines from the compressor.

To install:

This component is subjected to constant high pressure from hot fluid and must be sealed correctly or it will leak.

9. Clean the mating surfaces prior to sealing the water pump.

10. Install the water pump on the engine. Use a new gasket coated with sealer.

11. Install the water-pump-to-compressor front bracket mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

12. Install the air conditioning compressor front mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

13. Reconnect all hoses to the water pump.

14. Install the fan blade, spacer (or fluid unit), pulley, and bolts as an assembly.

15. On engines with air conditioning, install the idler pulley assembly, alternator, and adjusting bracket.

16. On engines without air conditioning, install the alternator and bracket.

17. Install the drive belt(s).

18. Install the radiator. Fill the cooling system and adjust the tension of the drive belt(s).

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
Remove the air cleaner intake tube (if necessary).
Remove the upper radiator hose.
Remove the fan shrouds.
Remove the engine fan.



WARNING
Do not place the viscous fan drive assembly in the horizontal position. If placed horizontally, the silicone fluid in the viscous drive could drain into its bearing assembly and contaminate the bearing lubricant.

Remove the drive belt(s).
If the vehicle has V-belts:
Remove the alternator.
Remove the bracket that supports the alternator, compressor or idler pulley (without A/C). The compressor will be supported by a rear mounting bracket.
Remove the air pump.
Remove the power steering pump front mounting bracket (if equipped). It is not necessary to remove the hoses. Support the power steering pump with mechanic's wire or equivalent.



If the vehicle has a serpentine belt:
Remove the water pump pulley bolts.



Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
Label and disconnect the heater and bypass hoses from the water pump. On later models, to ease installation, remove the pump before you remove the bypass hose.


On some later models, it may be necessary to remove the heater hose tube; this is done by removing the bracket and twisting the tube to release. Discard the old O-ring and replace with a new one for reassembly.

Remove the water pump retaining bolts, noting their location.
To install:

Clean the gasket surfaces thoroughly.
Install a new gasket and position the water pump on the engine block. If necessary, guide the bypass hose on at this time.
Install the bolts, in their original locations, and tighten in a crisscross pattern to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
Install the heater hoses, and bypass tube, if necessary. Tighten the clamp on the heater hose placed on the pump before the bolts are tightened.


On the models where the tube had to be removed, install the tube into the water pump with a new O-ring, and tighten the bracket.

Install the lower radiator hose.
On models with V-belts:
Install the power steering pump and bracket.
Install the air pump.
Install the bracket to the alternator and the air conditioning compressor (if equipped).
Install the alternator.



On models with a serpentine belt:
Install the water pump pulley bolts, and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).



Install the drive belt(s).
Install the viscous fan assembly.
Install the fan shrouds.
Install the upper radiator hose.
If necessary, install the air cleaner intake tube.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Fill and bleed the cooling system.
Check the cooling system for leaks.

My OEM water pump failed after 129,000 miles. That is not really a mystery. But after 4 months and 9000 miles later the new replacement pump went out. I said "new" not re-manufactued water pump. Ok, so it was replaced at no cost to me. When i picked up the truck, I had started it to take off and I heard a clicking noise and went inside to tell the shop. The guy comes out and says that its just the coolant that had blown out all over the engine are and it was the surpentine belt making the noise because of the coolant being on it. He said it would wear off soon. So I headed out and just 3 miles down the road I heard the squeal of the belt and 7 miles down the road as I acelerated on to the freeway, the steam was shooting out behind my vehicle as the third water pump failed in a catastrophic manner. What could possibly cause a water pump go out for a third time and worse then the previous two did? Water pumps are not complicated parts. Could it possibly have some to do with the fan/clutch assembly being bad in some way?

the cause could be a misajusted tension of the belt.
A slipping belt overheats and becomes glazed and eventually fails to drive the water pump.this can cause overheating.,causing pouley to wear out
A belt that is too tight can place a severe strain on the water pump bearings, causing them to fail.


use a torque wrench ( at proper specification)
use a belt tensionner gage to mesure the tension.

When you say "new" do you mean aftermarket or OEM?. doesnt make much sense considering that has an automatic belt tensioner.I would probably go to the dealer(as much as that hurts) and get a new OEM pump

We had problems with particular brands of pumps. The most reliable that I have found is Napa's new durapro pumps. Very rare is there a problem.
