The fuel indicator reads empty but tank is full

09chevy traverse lt. The electronic indicate reads _ _ _ to empty. Is this a sensor and is it cheap fix etc fuel indicator not working

Chances are the sending unit in the tank isn't working properly. The bad thing is it is part of the fuel pump.
