Engine Performance problem
2003 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 145k miles

Every time I got to accelerate my vehicle acts like its not getting fuel, the rpms will raise and stay raised till it jolts into the next gear. This happens around 30+ mph.I am also experienceing a strange whistling noise which I assume is a vacuum problem from a hose or gasket but that is not my main problem.

My mileage has dropped significantly, the vehicle wont shift properly and shudders into the next gears or stays at a high rpm and wont shift into the next gear.

This problem can often be a faulty TPI or MAF, I would also investigate the possible vacuum issue as well as this may have some baring on the problem, check for any unresolved fault codes with a scan as well, start here.

My car will not shift past what I believe is 2nd. I take off and it shifts once, then all it does is rev my engine up. I can continue to pick up speed but of course the faster I go the higher the rpm's go and the louder my engine gets so I don't go over 30. It doens't leak anything. Just started 2 days ago. Doesn't even get hot. All fluids have been checked and topped off from the dealership within the last couple weeks. Where should I start to see about getting this fixed. I have an hour drive to work and some is interstate driving and going 30 isn't an option. Help!

Trans in fail safe mode is check engine light on? Need to have trans scanned to see what has failed a shift solenoid or speed sensor will cause condition.

I think my check engine light has been disconnected. I has never been on. I have taken it to auto zone to hook it up to a computer and it had 7 codes and they said they don't mess with that many and then deleted them. My other question is how can you tell how much transmission fluid is in the car and if it needs more? There is no dip stick. Also can you put to much transmission fluid in the car?

Thanks for the donation

You will need to get the trouble codes retrieved for the Check Engine light. You can do this by using a diagnostic scanner. Most local part stores will do this service for free. Post the trouble codes and I will follow up. As for the tranny issue, inspect the fluid to ensure it is at proper level and make sure it does not have a burnt smell to it. Replace the tranny fluid and filter if necessary.

Tranny fluid is full and good, trouble codes came up as 1-2 and 3-4 shift solenoid, no signal to speed sensor, and torque converter solenoid. Replaced vehicle speed sensor still nothing, before I start replacing part after part any ideas?

DTC P0753 1-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical (2.4L)

Circuit Description
The 1-2 Shift Solenoid Valve (1-2 SS Valve) controls fluid flow acting on the 1-2 shift valve. The solenoid is a normally-open valve that, in conjunction with the 2-3 Shift Solenoid Valve (2-3 SS Valve), allows four different shifting combinations (Refer to the 4T40-E Shift Solenoid State Table). The 1-2 SS Valve is attached to the valve body, within the transmission.

The solenoid receives ignition voltage through the fused circuit. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) commands the solenoid ON or OFF by providing a ground path through circuit 1222.

When the PCM detects a continuous open, short to ground, or short to power in the 1-2 SS Valve circuit, then DTC P0753 sets. DTC P0753 is a type A DTC.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
†The ignition switch is in the RUN position.

†The system voltage is 9-16 volts.

†The PCM commands the solenoid ON, and the voltage remains high for 4.3 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
†The PCM illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).

†The PCM commands maximum line pressure.

†The PCM commands a soft landing to 2nd gear.

†The PCM inhibits TCC engagement.

†The PCM freezes shift adapts from being updated.

†DTC P0753 is stored in the PCM history.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
The PCM turns OFF the MIL after three consecutive trips without a failure reported.
A scan tool can clear the DTC from the PCM history. The PCM clears the DTC from the PCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a failure reported.
The PCM cancels the DTC default actions when the fault no longer exists and the ignition is OFF long enough in order to power down the PCM.
Diagnostic Aids
†An open in circuit 1039 will cause multiple DTCs to set.

†Inspect the wiring at the PCM, the transmission 20-way connector, the 1-2 SS Valve 2-way connector, and all other circuit connecting points for the following conditions:

- A bent terminal

- A backed out terminal

- A damaged terminal

- Poor terminal tension

- A chafed wire

- A broken wire inside the insulation

- Moisture intrusion

- Corrosion

†When diagnosing for an intermittent short or open condition, massage the wiring harness while watching the test equipment for a change. Refer to Shift Solenoid Valve State and Gear Ratio .

Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

DTCs P0758 and P1860 will also set if the power circuit is open.

This step tests the electrical operation of the solenoid.

This step tests the PCM and the wiring to the transmission.

This step tests circuit 1222 for a short to battery power.

This step verifies that the circuit has the correct resistance.

You need to do a relearn for the security system.

The following procedure allows for anyone to reprogram the Body Function Controller (BFC) Learned Data Code without any tools (other than the scan tool) when a new Ignition Switch is installed. The following is the auto learn procedure:

The Body Function Controller (BFC) will set the DTC 3031 Controller in learn mode when entering the reprogramming procedure.

Clear all DTCs
Turn the Ignition Switch to the START position.
The vehicle will start and then stall.
Turn the Ignition Switch to the RUN position until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (approximately 10 minutes ).
Turn the Ignition Switch to the OFF position and wait for 10 seconds, then turn the Ignition Switch back to the RUN position.
The Body Function Controller (BFC) will learn the new data on the next start attempt.

Note: This may work without the scan tool but you should use one.
