You'll need to have your vehicle scanned for codes. Most auto parts suppliers will do this for free. This will give you a starting point as to why your vehicle is behaving the way it is.
A common failure on these engines is the ignition coil resulting in a misfire.
So, until we know why the check engine light came on I can't really steer you in the right direction because there is quite a lot of components that can cause this
