2008 Volkswagen Jetta Car trouble please help

My moms car is a 08 vw jettea. A few days ago the gas meter just stopped working. She doesnt know if its a fuse problem. Now when she tries to put the car from park to reverse or even drive, it feels like the gear shifter is jammed. She doesnt know whats wrong with it and im afraid if she keeps trying to mess with she will make it worse
Source. My mom is also a 10 year worker for AutoZone and previsouly used to work for PepBoys. So she does know quite a few about cars

Check faults in every module. This is the first step, after I have the faults I can tell you what is wrong.

Possible causes: faulty fuel sender unit, faulty instrument cluster, or faulty module.
Shifter issue may be a faulty shifter box, shift solenoid or module as well
