I am considering buying a Prius but I am concerned about replacing the hybrid battery that can cost $4,000.00. How many miles can a Prius go before the battery needs replacing? Does it really cost $4,000.00?

I am thinking about purchasing a used 2nd generation Prius. However I only drive about 1,500 miles per year. I do short trips of 4 miles and 7 miles one way. But is seems some people are saying that with my low yearly mileage the battery life will be reduced. I am not concerned about mpg and temperature is not a problem. So does the low yearly mileage affect battery life all other things being equal?

Hello, I'm Danny.

Yes, having low mileage commutes can affect the hybrid batteries performance. It would take more than 4 miles to properly regenerate the battery. You would might want to consider extended driving on the weekends to keep the battery in optimum performance range. Something to consider before purchasing the car. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

There isn't much you can do. There can be excessive resistance in the power cables, a problem with the hybrid transaxle assembly, a problem with a convertor or invertor, and problem with the battery ECU, main battery cable, system relay. Who knows.

Sell the Prius and go buy a Chevrolet Suburban. Who cares what Ed Begley Jr. Thinks. Besides, these cars are sold on the premise that we have to save the planet from Anthropogenic Global Warming.

A high price to pay for a hoax.
