I have a 2008 Kia Rio, which has been a great car. Yesterday, however, while speeding up on a highway, the engine light came on, the car started to shake, and the power dropped noticeably. I pulled off the highway, checked that fluids were all ok, but now the car shakes even when idling. It won't accelerate well at all, shaking throughout, and feels like it will stall when idling. I don't even try to go past 80 kph, and now the engine light will flash a few times before staying on. No previous problems like this have ever been noticed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The local mechanic isn't sure that his equipment can read codes in a 2008.

It sounds like a misfire. You need to have the codes read. if there is a nationally recognized parts store near you, have the computer scanned there. Most do it for free. That way we can narrow down what the problem is.

As far as your mechanic, if he has an OBD2 scanner, it will read the codes.
