2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tow Truck Driver Accidently Connected Jumper Cables

Tow truck driver accidently connected jumper cables backwrads on my car. I saw smoking and he switched them immediately. My mechanics replaced my battery, but now are saying the regulator inside the alternator needs to be replaced, but they are not 100% if this was caused by the reversed polarity from the tow truck driver.

Was the alternator charging before the jump start?Alot of things can be damged from a reverse jump.
