Clutch replacement?

If the hydraulic system is working ok, and you have a very heavy pedal i also would be expecting to find the problem in the pressure plate, but first the hydraulics must be check to ensure that nothing is binding in the master or the actual pedal box that may be causing the heavy pedal first. Check the diagrams below to show you how to replace the clutch.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID TYPE

Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF): P/N 08798-9016

Always use Honda MTF. Using motor oil can cause stiffer shifting because it does not contain the proper additives.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

My clutch pedal is flat on the floor. When you start the vehicle in neutral, it cannot go into any gear. When turned off, it goes freely into all gears. Does this vehicle have a hydraulic system or/and a clutch? This is also a (4X4) stick shift. What could possibly be the problem? I brought this vehicle all the way to Liberia , West Africa with me.

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Seems one of the hydraulic components is faulty.

Thanks but does the CRV have a hydraulic system? I know of the brakes master cyl., does the clutch system has it own master cyl. or you are referring to the same brakes master cyl. When the vehicle if off, It goes into all the gears freely without even touching the clutch . You cannot even press the clutch, it is already to the floor. When you start the vehicle in neutral , it cannot go into any gear. I all the way here in Africa with this vehicle. Any further expianation would be highly be appreciated

It has its own master cylinder for the clutch. Have you opened the hood yet?

Yes , I am handy and have installed brakes, alternator , starter , axles, etc.
However, my brake master cyl. Reservoir is completely empty. I will fill with brake fluid . Not certain if it will make a difference if the clutch has its own master cyl.

Brakes and clutches use brake fluid. The clutch has its own master cylinder and if it is not equipped with a reservoir, it would take its fluid from the brake master cylinder.

My. Honda CRV starts in neutral but cannot go into any gears. I was advised to check the master cyl. reservoir and it was empty. I filled it and the clutch pedal is still to the floor. My battery ran down and I cannot start the vehicle. Is the master cyl electrically operated to pump the fluid? How do I bleed the clutch . If I start the vehicle , will the master cyl. build pressure?

No the master cylinder is hydraulic no electric power.If the master cylinder was empty you have a leak you need to find.Have you looked for lels like the slave cylinder?

Thank you again. I located the clutch master cyl. and reservoir. Both are much smaller. It was completely empty. I refilled it but unfortunately my battery ran down and I cannot start the vehicle. . The clutch pedal is still to the floor. Is the master cyl electrically operated that allows the fluid to build up pressure.? I see a wire running to the back of the master cyl. The clutch pedal is flat to the floor, no pressure, I cannot pump the pedal. So how do I bleed it?

You would need a helper to pump the clutch for you. When it goes down, lift it up manually and press down again before you release the beeder bolt. Repeat it a few times and if it fails to build up, you moght need to have the master clinder and/or slave cylinder repaired/replaced.

I checked for leaks and nothing so far, but will continue.,

Look inside where the clutch pedal attaches also.You have to ubokt the slave to see the leak.

My CRV appears to need a new clutch. The RPM's increase when pressing the gas and the engine has to "catch up" plus I've noticed a burning smell like rubber. How much should it cost to replace a clutch from a repari shop?
Any other ideas what the problem could be?

The clutch disc is worn thats why the trans. is slipping when you accelerate. When you replace the clutch it is better to replace the clutch assembly (clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and resurface the flywheel). Cost about $600-$1000

Today I was starting my car and when I stepped on the clutch, I heard a sound then I could not get into gear. Also, the clutch does not give me the same pressure on the feedback when you step on it. Does it sound like that I need a new clutch or something just slap maybe some type of clutch cable. Could anyone tell me how I could check that before the expensive repair...

Seems the clutch has given way and you would need to replace it.

Check if the clutch fluid is sufficient.

Hi Mike,

Since that is a Hydrolic Clutch it usually doesn't need to be adjusted. Have you checke the Clutch Master Cylinder to make sure it is full? Also check and make sure there are no leaks. It is possible that either the Clutch Master and/or Slave have gone bad or possibly the Clutch itself.

For the last month I have been having issues with my clutch. It started with the clutch loosing pressure to the point that it was almost on the floor. I was told to try and bleed the slave cylinder. That didn't work so i took it to a garage and they replaced the master cylinder. when i got the car back, the petal felt really had to push down, but i thought nothing of it. the car worked fine for a day and then i drove to the store and when i came back out to drive to work, i could not put the car into gear. there was pressure on the petal but the car would not shift into gear when on. i could put it into gear when the car was off. so i took it back to a garage. they bleed the line and readjusted the petal (it wasn't adjusted correctly initally) and said i should be good to go. a couple days later, my clutch started to slip. I took the car back and got the whole clutch and slave cylinder replaced. the lines were not replaced. Car drove fine for a couple of days and then i felt the clutch pedal start to get more pressure. eventaully the same thing happened. I got into my car and went to drive and i could not put the car into gear. the clutch petal felt harder to press down. the only way i have found to get it so i can drive my car home is to open up the slave clyinder valve which releives the pressure in the clutch petal and i am able to drive for a couple days. could there be a problem with the line or is it maybe a bad master cylinder?

The symptom description indicates a faulty master cylinder or its push rod to pedal clearance is improperly adjusted. Some people have the habit of resting their foot on the clutch pedal while driving, that would cause the problem as well.

Another possibility is a damaged flexible hose, it is preventing fluid from returning and after driving, the fluid heats up and clutch self applies resulting in the clutch slipping.

I have a 2001 CRV se with the same problem. The clutch start to feel soft ....no pressure or resistance when pressing it ask drive going up hill. I recently had the master / slave cylinder changed and it felt better for a day or so. I also had the clutch plate replaced. Any ideas?

Just recently we have noted that there is quite a lot more play in the clutch pedal than before. It seemed like it briefly returned to the usual amount of play, but is now excessive....about 50-60% of the available excursion of the pedal before it disengages the transmission when pushing the pedal in. There are no new noises, and the car still shifts easily, once the clutch is engaged. Does this sound like a problem with the linkage (could have slipped d/t age, cold weather)? Clutch fluid low? Possibly the whole clutch is on the way out?

No, its not so much of a release problem as an engagement problem. Normally, I have to push the clutch pedal in about 25% of the way for the clutch to start to work and change gears (even though still pushing it all the way to the floor as one should), and now I have to push it about 60% of the way in before the transmission starts to disengage and I can shift.

Does that make sense? Sorry, but my mechanical skills and basic knowledge are pretty limited.

The clutch pedal is now lower than prevuiously and possible causes are a faulty ckutch hydraulic system. Check the clutch fluid level and if low, check the master and slave cylinder for leakages.

Had clutch replaced by mechanic. Paid him in full. 3 days later the clutch burnt out leaving me stranded. Mechanic now saying could be gearbox. I have never had any trouble with selection or gear engagement. Can still select gears in Honda, but have no clutch engagement. Driving along happily, clutch starts slipping, change down gear, car (rpm) revs out and need to change down gear again, clutch really slipping by now and smell is shocking. I might not be a mechanic but I know the difference between a clutch and gearbox. It is the exact same problem I took it to the mechanic in the first place, only this time I was out woop-woop when I became stranded. I don't think the replacement clutch was adjusted correctly, as I complained that the clutch pedal didn't feel right (was assured by mechanic everything ok). I'm pulling my hair out. What's gone wrong?

sounds like a clutch to me from your description.the only adjustment on these is the clutch pedal height and freeplay. it is hydraulic so there is no adjustment to that but something has to be wrong for a clutch to go out that quick something was missed. Of course i'm assuming you weren't mad at the price and put eh car against a building and purposely burnt it up which I think is not the case lol.....( I've actually had someone do that btw lol)
