Is it possible for an engine to deteriorate over time, going un-noticed or will there be a clear signal when a problem occurs? I was sold a car that after 3000 miles the engine started rattling and needed replacing which I wasn't happy about!

After having a car for several weeks a rattling noise developed when the car was started and a significant noise.

Many thanks.

It sounds like the engine went bad and needs some inspection.
