We just got out transmission redone for $1400 now the car is chugging and smelling of some kind of fluid burning? Any ideas on what could be burning? Could they have not tightened something or perhaps placed something in the wrong place?

Yup. Mechanics make mistakes once in a while and they deserve the chance to correct them. In this case, the problem should have been noticed on the test drive. It's also possible a hose or wiring connector wasn't fully seated and worked okay for a little while. Regardless, take the van back to the shop right away. If you wait, they can rightfully argue this is a new problem that you're trying to blame on them.
