When the engine is started it ticks and as I accelerate the tick gets faster. It also smells of gas when I first start it. Do you know what it could be and if it will be an expensive fix or is it something I can fix at home?

peed increases with rpm? may be a lifter noise. what viscosity oil do you use. you could try adding LUCAS oil stabilizer.
