Hello, my TPMS light is flashing after startup and stays on for about a minute before staying on solid. Normally this would mean a tire is going flat, but the pressure is fine and there are no leaks. The owners manual says the TPMS may be malfunctioning, but the car has not been washed in some time and we have had quite a bit of snow, ice, and salt from the roads and I wonder if that may be affecting the TPMS. I want to wait until a warm day and wash the undercarriage of the car fully before going to a repair shop. What do you think? Thanks, Roosevelt.

The flashing and then staying on steady is an indicator that there is a fault in the system. Cleaning the vehicle won't change that. What needs to be done is to have the computer scanned to determine where the fault is coming from. It could be as simple as a bad sensor in the wheel or a module that isn't working properly. Although most parts stores scan computers for free, chances are they won't have a scanner good enough to read anything other than engine codes. As a result, you will most likely have to take the vehicle to a shop or a dealer to have it checked.

I'm glad to help. I have to be honest, I have not yet seen one of these TPMS systems from any manufacturer last very long. Every one of them always end up having trouble.

If you get a chance and remember, let me know what you find out from the shop.

Thanks,
Joe

Hello Joe,

Just to give an update on the TPMS light on my dash. We had a warm day here, and after clearing snow from my vehicle I started my car and noticed the light was functioning normally again. I did not take the car to a shop, but now it is working fine, showing on start up and going out as it should. I don't know if something was on one of the sensors that caused the light to stay on, but in any case the TPMS is working properly now.

Go figure!

Thanks again for your help, Roosevelt.
