Ran engine without oil now its gone

I have a volvo s40 2.4i, the engine was run without oil and is junk now. I would like to put a new engine in it and get it running again. What do I need to know about buying the right engine? I have a mechanic that will do the install itself, but the rest is for me do do including buying the right engine

The timing belt cover has the engine label on it. Take that to the dealer and order an engine there. Trust me on this one, you will be better off unless you want to try and locate a used one but to me that is insane to even think about spending so much money for a used engine? Or have a machine shop rebuild your engine if it will save you some money?
