Hi,

I have a toyota avensis 2007 tr. The stereo power button does not work and so as the other functions of the stereo including the sat nav unit buttons apart from the tilt function which works. However the sat nav works fine and shows maps and voice direction. Due to the inability of buttons not working I can not make full use of sat nav. Electricians have not been able to diagnose anything apart from replacing the whole unit, which could cost me a fortune. However, there are some solutions based online which states that there may be a dry soldering joint, which electricians have not been able to identify.I would not like to replace the unit as its very costly, I have also heard it is a common problem in Toyota avensis. Please advise?

Cold solder joint. Or, defective solder joint. It's when the person (or machine) doing the soldering didn't properly heat up the joint being soldered before applying the solder. Not something the average electrician is going to be able to notice or fix. Check to see if the unit is under warranty, as that is the proverbial manufacturing defect. Find someone skilled with a soldering iron and have them look at it. Have them open it up carefully and check all of the solder connection over, looking for one that is dull grey, instead of shiny silver. Someone that is good with a soldering iron will be able to fix it.
