Stalls when transmission is shifted from park to reverse

Vehicle starts and idles great. As soon as i shift from park to reverse, it sputters and stalls. If i start in neutral, it idles fine, but as soon as i shift to drive it sputters and stalls. Had a rebuilt transmission put in and a TCM, truck ran great when mechanic brought it home, left it for the night, and when i started it the next morning it did this. Mechanic changed the TCM again and it ran great for a day, left it for the night and when i came out the next morning it did it again.

Are there any diagnostic trouble codes related to this? Also, when you place it in gear, does the vehicle jump forward or backward and then stall, or does it just stumble and stall?

Let me know. Also, let me know if there are diagnostic trouble codes that were retrieved.

No DTC codes, the vehicle just stumbles and stalls.

Hi,

Anytime there is an engine drivability issue, I always start by checking for engine vacuum leaks, fuel pressure, and inspecting ignition components. Has any of that been done?

Next, do you remember when the vehicle was last tuned up? Also, does this issue seem to be affected by outside temperature or anything you can think of? Is there anything you noticed that stands out other than the stumble?

After this happens, are you able to restart the engine and it runs normally?

Julia, when you restart it, does it just do the same thing? If so, the first thing I suggest is checking for engine vacuum leaks. It's simple to do. Here is a link that shows how it's done:

If nothing is found and it is drivable, have the computer scanned. Most parts stores will do it free of charge for you.

Let me know if you find anything and we'll continue with testing. If there are codes, that will point us in the right direction. If there isn't, I will walk you through different things that can be causing the issue.
