compression check for valves

car stooped suddenly in running.took it for repairing center.they changed belt tensioner.now they r telling that there is no compression.They have to remove and check for valves in that.Is there a problem with engine or only with valves?

Its not an interference engine-they should be able to tell if its a valve and rings problem without taking it apart-could also be a timing belt problem-
