I'm told I need trans cooler lines and replacement of rear trailing arm bushings on my 2007 Subaru....what does that even mean?

Transmission cooler lines are small metal pipes that take hot transmission fluid to a tank in the radiator or an external cooler in front of the radiator to cool the fluid. Those lines usually have a section that is made of rubber so they can flex, and very often they leak and need to be replaced.
Trailing arms are what holds the rear axle or wheel assemblies in position. To prevent noise but allow those parts to move up and down to absorb road shock, they're mounted with rubber bushings. If the bushings wear out they'll cause clunking noises and allow the wheels to move out of alignment resulting in tire wear and sometimes poor handling.
When mechanics aren't real busy, they will often take the time, shop rules permitting, to take you under the car, show you the problems, and explain why they need to be fixed.
