control knob for air direction (defrost, floor, etc) will not turn

2007 Subaru Impreza wagon, What is involved in fixing this? knob will turn from left to straight up, but not to the right where defrost and defrost/floor is. Just purchased today from private party, was hot, didn't check knobs. Air and heat work great, just can't aim to defrost.

You are looking @ a bad cable or mode door. You will have to start removing parts to see which piece is binding.
