I HAVE SEEN YOUR QUESTION ON HERE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME

I DO NOT KNOW YOUR VEHICLE AT ALL

I DO KNOW SOME THINGS ABOUT LATCHES

IF THIS IS A MECHANICAL TYPE LATCH THAT SORTA STRADDLES A "BAR" OR IS SIMILAR TO SOME DOOR LATCHES I MAY CAN OFFER SOMETHING!

NOT TOO LONG AGO MY STEP-DAUGHTER AND HER FRIENDS WENT SOMEWHERE IN HER EXPLORER. WHEN THEY RETURNED STEP-DAUGHTER WAS REPEATEDLY SLAMMING THE BACK HATCH....LIKE BREAK THE GLASS OUT HARD!

WHEN I WAS FINALLY BROUGHT INTO THE PICTURE, I FOUND THE LATCH ON THE HATCH TO BE IN THE "CLOSED POSITION". THE ABUSE SHE WAS GIVING IT WAS DOING NOTHING EXCEPT TEARING STUFF UP!

THE EZ FIX WAS TO HOLD THE HATCH HANDLE UP, AND WITH YOUR FINGERS OR A STICK MOVE THE "JAWS" OF THE LATCH BACK INTO THE "OPEN POSITION"

ON THE EXPLORER, THERE ARE TWO CATCHES WITHIN THE LATCH (LEFT AND RIGHT) THE EZist WAY TO SORTA EXPLAIN IT IS: IT'S SORTA LIKE THE JAWS ON A BEETLE (BUG), AN ANT, OR A GRASSHOPPER!

THE WAY THEY ARE DESIGNED, IT'S KINDA HARD TO "LOOK AT IT" AND SEE WHAT POSITION THEY ARE IN....HOLDING THE HANDLE "OPEN" AND PUSHING EACH SIDE OF THE LATCH AWAY FROM THE DOOR, IF THEY MOVE, MOST LIKELY THE DOOR "THOUGHT" IT WAS LATCHED ONTO THE RECEIVING BAR.

TURNS OUT A LITTLE GAL BUDDY OF HERS, NAMED CRYSTAL, WAS PLAYING WITH THE LATCH, WHILE THEY WERE LOADING THEIR GIRLY STUFF INTO THE BACK AT THE STORE. BASICALLY SHE PUSHED THE JAWS IN, WHILE THE DOOR WAS OPEN.

I HOPE THIS HELPS, IT'S ABOUT ALL I CAN OFFER

I DID FIND A SIMILAR SITUATION WITH A DOOR

LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS
