2007 Pontiac G6 Not going forward in drive

My car has the auto drive and the manual. I am out of town and my car was in drive and stopped. I tried putting it in manual and it worked i was able to shift down and up. What is the matter with my car. Can i make in 556 miles driving it in manual

have the trans fluid checked first.

it cold be a broken or a worn part in shifter, best to have a trans guy look at it.
