I have a 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. There is an indwelling cartridge inside of the oil filter. There is a flush hex nut on the base of the filter. Does that nut need to be removed to remove the entire filter?

You take the nut out 1st to drain the oil out the filter and then remove the cup where the bolt was installed to remove the oil filter I included a diagram to show how things goes together
