car in drive and it starts slower than usual

What does it mean when I put the car in drive and it starts slower than usual and makes very loud engine noises? I put the car into drive and it starts operating very slowly, slower than usual and on top of that it sounds like a gigantic laundry machine. This has never happened before and it takes me several tries to mess with the car until it sounds and run normally.

Have the transmission fluid level and condition checked-if okay-get it pressure tested to find out more what's going on.
