Diesel engine starts but cuts out immediately. Finally starts runs ok after several minutes of trying. Never happened before but was a cold morning- not quite a frost. Car runs as normal once it started and started perfectly well after initial problem.

Did you check for trouble codes?
A sensor fault can cause intermittent hard starting.
