Being a female and having to rely on a hopefully honest mechanic it seems that every time my daughter ( who has an older car) and I take a car for repair or smog they recommend a cleaning that costs anywhere from $40 to $100. My son thinks its not necessary at all. Is it?

At the mileage that you are on, I would not think it is necessary.

I only recommends cleaning when you have performance losses or fuel consumption increases, other than that, a bottle of fuel cleaner into the fuel tank now and then should be sufficient.
