what does it mean when my car shakes and the admission light is on?

i was driving down the express way and i went to accelerate past 40 mph and my car began to shake and*****. then the admission light went on. it would not accelerate past 40 mph and it would shake when i tried. also it the problem would go away and then come back. after a while it was okay but the admissions light didnt not turn off.
