Air conditioning has been operating intermittently. I can tap the a/c button several times and the unit will work. Took to a mechanic and was told the a/c main relay shorted out and the a/c coil knocking. They recommended replacing the shorted relay and the shorted coil. What is meant by a "shorted a/c coil" and a "knocking a/c coil"? Thanks

I have not heard anything; this was told to me by mechanic. Mechanic said they found the a/c coil knocking. Mechanic said the condenser coil needed to be replaced. Tomorrow, I will get a stethoscope and listen to both the compressor and the coil. Please advise if there is a better way. Thanks

Checked several items. There appeared to be normal engine noise when I lifted the hood. Engine RPMs were about 750; idle. Ambient air temp was about 77 degrees, air from front vents was about 49.8 (max cool/max fan). Checked lines to and from ac compressor with a stethoscope. there did not appear to be any abnormal noises, just regular rotational noise, normal sounds.

If tapping the switch makes the compressor works, the problem should more likely be at the switch and not at coils etc.

The knocking A/C coil, actually it is not the coil that is knocking. The pulley bearing is bad allowing the pulley to knock against the magnetic coil when in operations. This could be intermittent if the bearing is just beginning to fail.
