Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Honda Accord 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 213k miles

I bought my accord nearly year ago, for 3.8k.
I have since put new transmission in it, and am not considering tune-up that is necessary. I am a poor grad student trying with tight budget but would want this car to last another 100k at least. Can you give me the recommendations for tune-up. I was told the timing belt is non-interference, and the valves don't need adjusting. Lately the ideling seems to be bit off (shaking a little). I was wondering if that would be spark plugs (I was given quote over $100 for spark plugs - platinum - that I thought unnecessary). I have quotes for timing belt and water pump alone at $650, and dealership wanting $950 for tune up (additional $500 for timing belt).
Any help in what you would consider top priority would be recommended. I only have been driving local, but will be driving long distances (9hrs away) more regularly due to relationship.
Thank you for your insight.

You do not need platinum tipped spark plugs. Copper core (about $2-$3 each plug) is all you need. Make sure you get NGK though.

The timing belt would also be a good idea, however, if it snaps on you, your engine will be safe, so you can prolong the service for a tad longer, but not another 100k

Hi there,

If you are not having any real problems, I would just be doing the air & fuel filter and get a scan to check for any unresolved fault codes, I would also check the valve clearances and the timing belt will be due at 210K so if that has not been done I would be doing this as well.

My neighbor just did a tune-up, replaced the timing belt, and water pump on my 1999 Honda Accord EX. The first time I drove it minutes after the tune-up, from inside the car, the engine noise is louder (ONLY WHEN I ACCELERATE) than it's ever been, even after my last tune-up. It's not horribly loud, but loud enough to notice that it's not like it was before. Maybe it just has the spunk now that it's been missing? I don't think it's an exhaust leak, which kind of sputters with the purr of the engine. This is no different noise, just louder, like I'm starting to wind it out. Can anyone help? Thanks, Laurel

It is very hard to trouble shoot a sound. Especially if you can't hear it. But hear are a few things you can think on. Does it seem to be a knock or a tapping noise. A tapping noise is usually valve noise. It is usually caused by loose valve adjustment or a defective valve train part. Low oil pressure will cause hydraulic lifters to make a tapping noise. The fact that a new timing belt has been installed we must consider the possibility of improper camshaft timing. Does this noise get louder under a load and or when it is cold? Does it sound like spark knock? Does it get louder when hot and under a load?
Excessive main bearing clearance usually heard as a heavy thump. Excessive rod bearing clearance is usually heard as a heavy rapping noise that matches engine speed.

Good Luck

I should have been more clear. There is no BAD noise to identify. It is just a louder volume of engine noise as I accelerate. Runs fine, I just hear more engine than I remember ever hearing. No knocking, or tapping, just like I lost my muffler, but not that extreme. Thanks for your help.

I replaced a head gasket on a 98 accord, four cyl, new timing belt with a rebuilt head. When finished the engine idles rough and dies. The diagnostic says fuel lean and rich, ramdom misfire, cyl #1, 2, 3 misfire, and knock sensor cir fault. This sounds like a lot of business, can you simplify please. Stan

It sounds like an O2 sensor is going crazy or you have a vacuum leak. Have you checked them? Also, make sure you didn't pinch any wires forget any vacuum hoses.

You will need a air filter, a fuel filter, add some fuel injector and system cleaner in tank.

Change the oil. Lubricate the front end. Check and top off the fluids. Or change if nedded. Check the brakes.

Hi svdonnelly,

Generally tune ups means checking/adjusting or replacing :
1. Spark plugs.
2. Spark plug cables ( if equipped)
3. Igniton timing.
4. Air and fuel filter.
5. Beltings.

Hi babygirl2003,

Apart from the normal oil changes and spark plugs and inspection of components, etc the following are recommended.
