Have had this noise since purchasing the car approx. 2yrs ago. Dealer I bought it from says he couldn't hear it.
It's a rotating knock that is coming from the rear end. It's most noticeable when going down hill on over-run.
It's almost inaudible when in neutral, & can't hear it under acceleration. I've checked the drive shafts and uni joints and they appear to be sound. Also, it doesn't look like the drive shafts are hitting anything.
Is it possible that it could be the diff. bearings?
It may be my imagination, but the noise seems to have got louder over that time.

If you have not done so already go get a rear end alignment check done, these commodores with the IRS must be set up with a Jig if the rear end has been removed at any time, failing to do this can cause odd noises, rear tyre wear and a floating feeling from the rear end, this would be a good place to start looking for this problem.
