Gear selector cable

I have a Ford Fiesta 2007 1.25 petrol manual.

The gear selector cable enters the transmission at the top front and is secured by a plastic locking ring. How do I release this locking ring. I have tried everything and can not get it to release. It seems to have four gaps in the locking ring/cap 90 degrees apart.

I had to get this from our Ford site and it's from a 2008 because I don't remember when Fiesta came to the u.s. it should be the same or similar though. pic enclosed.
