Heard a grinding/clinking noise coming from the front of my 4x4 ford explorer. Took it to shop where they said the noise was coming from the front differential-there was metal shavings in the fluid. Waiting on estimate. Question is can I repair myself by purchasing rebuilt kit on line? I am an average mechanic. Whats the best/least expensive means to do this repair? Options?

Replacing parts is somewhat difficult but you have to determine why things are coming apart first. It's going to happen again if the cause isn't found and solved. Adjustment of the gear clearances and pinion gear preload is critical and requires special tools to prevent gear noise and wear.
