When it is cold outside, I hear a clunking noise coming from the front or middle. The clunking lasts only a minute or it ends after taking the car out of park. Is it a tranny problem or something with the catalytic convertor? It has a muffled clunk, clunk, clunk sound.

It could be many things. If the sound is from the front, it doesn't sound trans related. However, if it stops when you put it in gear, it could be (since you mentioned it could be from the middle of the car). Make sure the trans fluid is full. Check it when the engine is at operating temp, engine running, and the vehicle in park. Also, open the hood, have a helper start the engine (cold) for you and see if you can locate where the sound is coming from.
