how do i trouble shoot the check engine light on and engine noise?

car has oil. we hooked up a gauge to the sending unit. It initially had 40 psi then dropped.

The pressure will as the oil gets hotter and thinner.What did the oil pressure drop to at idle?

dropped to 10 lbs after 3-4 minutes with cold engine. Oil light comes on sporadically.

What size engine do you have?That oil pressure sounds about right.
