a hole was found on top of the plastic gas tank .. The mechanic is epoxing the hole. He said he was going to save us money instead of replacing the fuel tank. Besides doing this fixit on the hole and besides replacing the tank itself. What other option is there? Also, have you ever heard of this damage to a gas tank?

First you have to figure out what caused the hole. A perfectly round hole with a formed depression probably had a rubber grommet poked into it with a hose or valve in the middle. I've seen screws run into gas tanks from people trying to mount something like speakers inside. A jagged hole with an irregular shape was likely caused by a rock getting stuck up there. A bolt hanging down could pierce it too if the tank was run into it while being reinstalled.

Your vehicle has a monitoring system for large and small leaks. However the hole is patched will have to have a perfect seal to prevent setting a diagnostic fault code and turning on the Check Engine light.
