I just bought a this used vehicle from my neighbor last week. Within 2 days the engine light came on, so I took it to the repair shop in my neighborhood. They diagnosed the problem as a cracked exhaust manifold and told me it will cost $948 to fix. what can I do?

It needs to be repaired. However, I don't know where you live, but that is extremely expensive for a manifold. I would get a second opinion. Also, you can get a used one from a salvage yard for much cheaper.

The reason for the expense, is that it probably has a precatalyst attached to it.
