lost drive gear on way home at a stop light.had to shift to first gear and shift up to third and drive home like that.Is there things that i can check to see if it can be rectified?

beyond checking the fluid, there is not much you can do. a shop with a scan tool can monitor the system to see if it is internal or electrical issue
