Volvo s40 1.8 petrol, manifold injected fuel system, manual transmission, 50000 miles, ireland. When the engine come to full running temperature, when I pull up at lights or come to a stop, the engine surges to about 3000 rpm and slowly reduces to normal idle speed. If I press the clutch during the surge, it stops the surge.
when the engine is cold there are no surges

Do you have a check engine light coming on as well? If you do, scan for fault codes. That should give you an idea as to were to start looking for the fault.

Try cleaning the throttle body and see if there is an ECM software update available for your car? The throttle sometimes gets dirty to where the plate starts sticking. I would recommend you get the cleaner from Volvo since the cleaner also acts like a lubricant to help the plate move more freely. The software update would just make some fine tune adjustments to the electronics side so it is not so sensitive. If that does not work then you should have it diagnosed to see if you have another issue? Good luck to you.
