Getting a rough whistling noise

When I am driving my car ( 2006 1.8 vauxhall vectra SRi) when I am in 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th when driving up and down the gears I am getting a rough whistling noise and I have noticed there is a small leak from under the car at the back of the engine but this could be coming from the transmission?

Took it to a garage and they said it could be the rack and the noise is coming from the power steering motor. But not too sure since they wanted nearly a $1000 to fix it?

Please help me :-)

Yes it could be the rack and power steering. Is the power steer fluid burnt?

There was a burnt smell. When the garage topped up the power steering level then a week later I went to do it and it was still at the same level. Brimmed. But I thank you for ur very fast reply.

Well not really sure but I would think the pump could make a noise or the belt on the pump could cause a noise. The mechanic should have went for a ride with you or atleast tried to duplicate the problem. There are so many things that can cause a noise like this it really has to be narrowed down. Good luck. We are here to help ant time.

Hello again, I have had some more development on the car situation. I was driving it just before and I heard a loud noise and then there was no drive in the car, I tried every gear but the car would not drive at all. But when I put it in gear it sounds like that same noise I was getting before when driving but only quieter. Any ideas?

No bother at all. I just don't see ow the slave could be the prob. If slave was bad speedometer would not move. But if speedo don't work then could be clutch.

Its in the garage and they called me and said my gear box was knackered and that's what has caused my clutch to break. So now I am getting the gears and clutch fixed. Hope this is the end of the problems.
