2006 Toyota Yaris While Driving Car Last Night Started Loosing Acceleration

While driving my 2006 toyota yaris car last night it started loosing acceleration until it shut down and the engine light came on. it would start back but no acceleration and it is backfiring. Please tell me what could be wrong?
