Bought some tires from Firestone. They said three of my tires had toe angles out of line and would cost $185 to re-align. I've never heard of the need to adjust the toe. Is this maintenance necessary? Is the cost reasonable?

Your front tires can be toed in or toed out. Basically, that means they are either pointing toward each other or away from each other. This problem will cause either the inside or outside of the tire to wear much faster than the center.

Now, I don't know where you are located. However, the cost seems high to me. I am in PA and the average cost for a 4 wheel alignment is around 60.00 dollars.

Thank you very much for your information. I live in OK where cost of living is pretty reasonable. The Firestone guy said my front left and both rear tires were toeing. He said the front tire could be done as a regular alignment but that the rear tires required something called "alignment shims/wedges/cams. If I remember correctly the extra cost has to do with factory specifications. I guess I should ask the Toyota dealer. Thanks again for your help!

That does make sense. The rear wheels are aligned using shims.

Let me know if you need anything.

THERE IS THAT THING THAT WE CALL A

"2nd OPINION" OR EVEN A "3rd OPINION"

MANY OF THOSE NATIONWIDE KINDA PLACES WILL STICK IT TO YA,

THEY HAVE A "MANAGER" FOR EVERYTHING FROM TIRES TO THE WATER FOUNTAIN (THESE FELLERS HAVE TO BE LOW PAID!) THEN THERE'S STUFF LIKE FRANCHISE FEES, ADVERTISING, ETC. ANY GUESS AS TO WHO PAYS FOR ALL OF THIS?

SOMEWHERE AROUND YOU THERE IS A PLACE THAT DOES NOTHING BUT ALIGNMENTS, MANY TIMES THIS PLACE WILL BE KNOWN FOR DOING "BIG RIGS" AND STUFF LIKE DUMP TRUCKS. AND THEY WILL TAKE ON LITTLE GUYS LIKE US!

THE ONE CLOSE TO ME ALIGNED MY '46 WILLY (KINDA EZ) FOR $25, COOL THING IS, IT WAS HOT SUMMERTIME, AND I HAPPENED TO BRING MY "MAGIC CONTAINER" ALONG (AS I DO, WHEN I'M AT THE AUTO SALVAGE YARD, AND OTHER PLACES TOO!)

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE TALKIN' JEEP AND OTHER STUFF, WHILE THE THREE OF US (OWNER, EMPLOYEE. AND ME) SUCK DOWN A COUPLE-THREE COLD PEPSIs AND MOUNTAIN DEWS. THE NEXT TIME I SHOWED UP WITH MY OTHER JEEP, IT WAS ALMOST LIKE "GROUND HOG DAY" (W/ BILL MURRAY) ALL OVER AGAIN!

DO SOME CALLING AROUND, CALL YOUR AUTO PARTS STORES, SPEAK TO THE "COMMERCIAL ACCOUNTS MANAGER" (WHO PROVIDES PARTS TO ALL OF THE SHOPS, BIG OR SMALL). HE/ SHE WILL LET YOU KNOW WHO HAS GREAT EQUIPMENT, DOES A GOOD JOB, AND CHARGES REASONABLY. HE HAS 1ST HAND EXPERIENCE WITH THE SHOPS.

RETURN BACK HERE WITH SOME GOOD NEWS!

THE MEDIC
