Is it true that when one strut is bad the other one must be replaced?

I was told my my mechanic that the left front strut is bad and needs to be replaced.

They also told me that when one strut is bad the other one across from it must be replaced and then an alignment must be done. Is this true?

IT isn't required, but it is recommended. You will have struts with different strength if you don't and it may cause the vehicle to handle differently.
