i have gust had new alternator fitted by saab and my engine managment light as come on why ?

The Engine Computer detected a problem and set a diagnostic fault code in memory. Have the code(s) read. They will lead you to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily a defective part. Some auto parts stores will read the codes for you for free but for a Saab you might have to go to the dealer.
