Is there a way of making a gear change smoother. The roughness I am talking about I don't believe is a fault per se as it is not that bad it is simply noticeable and quite irritating.

It is fine when accelerating.

Can it be made smoother?

not much you can do with this your self, if concerned take it to a trans specialist for an opinion, it will have to be road tested at least to get a feel for the problem.
