the changeover from 1st to 2nd is very harsh when cold
the changeover is lot smoother when car is warm / hot
this is for automatic transmission
what do I look for or what sensor would I have to replace if faulty
the engine is fine and has had regular service as well as in very good nick
Is the transmission oil a problem or is there a sensor that is faulty?

Check for trouble codes. Any codes present would tell you what to look for. Ensure the fluid is in good condition.
