We just bought a Mazda 6 s with 96,000 miles, it is a v6. It runs and drives great until you get in the gas to accelerate quickly as when passing a car. It produces a "violent thump" from the power train area. Our teenage daughter thought she had actually run over something..... What could cause this?

A fault with the transmission or bad engine mounts can cause this. You need to get it checked.
