started blowing out white smoke

my car passed its mot on 21/12/11, on xmas eve started blowing out white smoke and a burning smell from exhaust, smells sort of hot the car had never done this before and is not showing any warning lights on dashboard, if it passed its emission test, why has it started doing this so son after and what could be the problem. just my luck the warranty has just run out.
