when fitting a used ECU of the same make and part number, can you just remove the unit from your car and fit the used one in its place, without any need for computers or diagnostic machines, as you would say an air filter, or would it need to be made compatable to the engine or the particular vehicle it is intended for.

You should be able to just replace it if it is an exact fit. However, make sure the battery is disconnected and don't reconnect it until the part is installed and plugged in. Keep in mind, you are getting a used part. It could need flashed from sitting too long with no power, but it should be okay.
