while driving engine light came on and transmission jumps into 3rd gear, tried shifting into higher gear and it goes right back into 3rd gear, tried lower gear, same thing. checked fuses and wire leading to transaxle, everything seems fine, disconnected battery cables, engine light turned off and transmission was normal again. took it for a test drive and the same thing happened again, engine came on and transmission jumped into 3rd gear. what is causing this problem and is it ok to drive on 3rd gear until
i have it checked out...

That should be second gear that it's defaulting to, but regardless, the Transmission Computer detected a problem and shut the system down. That leaves you with reverse and one forward gear to allow you to drive it slowly to a repair shop without needing a tow truck.

Once a light turned on there will be at least one diagnostic fault code stored in the computer's memory. Those codes will direct you to the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis. In all likelihood the only code in the Engine Computer will be 700 which just means there's a code in the Transmission Computer.
